Workplace Health and Safety

The Graton Day Labor Center is not only working to develop skills for our laborers to allow for better employment opportunities, but are making it a priority to develop safe, healthy employment, free from risk of injury or dangerous exposures. As part of our center, we are developing trainings to increase laborer knowledge in safe operation of equipment, chemicals and building materials. Due to the transient nature of the day labor population, this will continue to be an ongoing effort of the center to provide ongoing training for members, as well basic orientation training for all new arrivals.

We encourage employers to understand that knowledge of safe operation of equipment such as lawnmowers and weed-whackers may be presumed for most of those raised in the US, but should not be assumed of someone who recently arrived from an area of the world that relies less on machinery. Please check on the knowledge of our laborers to operate dangerous machinery. They may be too shy to alert you of their lack of familiarity.

We also encourage community members to loan their skills to help teach health and safety skills to laborers. Please contact us if you have skills to offer.
