Oaxacan Organic Fair Trade Coffee Benefits The Graton Day Labor Center

One of our fund-raising strategies is to sell coffee from farmer cooperatives in the hills along the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Mexico. These farms grow some of the best coffee in the world and are not far from the communities where many of the men and women involved in the day labor center in Graton are from.

Imported and roasted by Taylor Maid Farms in Sebastopol, the coffee is served with traditional Mexican sweet bread (pan) at the center every Saturday. These early morning breakfasts create an opportunity for the laborers to gather to socialize and can focus on skill building (language, literacy, job training, and democratic leadership) while waiting for employment.

Board member and graphic artist, Merrilyn Joyce, created the beautiful label for our coffee. The rooster represents the early morning nature of day labor, and is also a reminiscent of the traditional, brightly painted wood carvings, called alebrijes, from Oaxaca.

We are proud to be able to help support small-acreage farmers and their families, and sustainable agriculture in rural Mexico. At the same time we are able to help sustain the activities at the day labor center through sales of this delicious, fair trade product. A 10 ounce can of some of the best coffee in the world for $10. And to think you are supporting organic fair-trade farmers in Oaxaca and the Graton Day Labor Center at the same time!
