Health care has been identified by the day laborers as their #2 priority- second only after the priority of work. The Graton Day Labor Center communicates with several local health agencies that provide services to day laborers.
The Sonoma County Public Health Department HIV van visits Graton twice a month. Its workers talk with the laborers, provide free testing, and distribute condoms.
The Southwest Community Health Clinic regularly sends staff to the Graton hiring site to give health education talks.
We are is currently collaborating with West County Health Centers to provide medical care to laborers in our center and at two nearby clinics. West County Health Centers has been offering health screening and health services in our building twice each week.
One of our staff organizers, Carlos Lopez, is attending a yearlong community health worker program at the Santa Rosa Junior College.
Once we have a roof over our heads, we hope to make health education and promotion a key aspect of the work of our center- through classes, counseling, health outreach and advocacy.
