Opposition to our proposal to create a hiring hall emerged in 2002 after a successful CLG-led organizing and fundraising campaign. Opponents voiced fear that a labor center would create a “magnet” in Graton for more day laborers that would negatively impact their town through worsening traffic, congestion, and homelessness. They were also concerned that CLG had not adequately addressed the needs of all residents and businesses in town, and that the group had not adequately communicated with the entire community.
In response, CLG recruited a nonprofit consultant organization that initiated a series of consensus meetings to help address the concerns of community residents and business owners. Key individuals and representative stakeholders were urged to participate in the consensus process. After more than twelve months, hundreds of hours of meetings and dozens of tough decisions and agreements, representatives from businesses, local government, residents, environmentalists, and CLG were able to reach consensus on all of their identified issues and concerns. We believe that community projects like a workers’ center cannot succeed without strong community involvement and support. The Consensus Implementation Committee continues to meets monthly to ensure good communication and support for all agreements.
